ABOUT VIEWING MOVIES BY VIDEO . . .

"Why should I go to a theater to see a movie when I can see it at home on video?"

That just about says it all.
The question answers itself:
Because you are home.

When you see a movie on video, you’re not getting a film experience; you’re getting a home television experience. Home sweet home. Surrounded by myriad physical and mental distractions and all the comforting security of your home. You control the experience. Theater viewing, by contrast, is an adventure. You are away. You are out there. There is one and only one thing in the "room" to grab and demand your attention: that enormous, brilliantly lit sound image up there in the dark. And you paid for it; you’re not likely to leave. There in your theater seat, no matter whom you are with, at all levels of consciousness . . . you are alone with the film. It owns you.

Tips on evaluating newspaper movie page hype and pizazz movie testimonials.

Check whose quote it is.  Mainly, Check the name of his or her publication. The critic and the publication may be top caliber, but if s/he’s not from a major national media source, the question is -- why was that critic used for the ad?  Why couldn’t the publicity offices find critics from major publications for their ads?  If the sources used are less than that, it means that positive opinion on that film is scarce.

Be wary of one-word quotes!  Look for whole sentences; even better -- whole paragraphs. From a critic’s original review a one-worder may have been lifted out of a comment that had a totally different sense, referring to something minor.

And . . . Be wary of hype that shouts, “The critics all agree!”   Never happened.
